Why can't I just use my GPS?

Yo class,

I'm really excited to have yous guys once again in my class. Our class has gotten smaller in size, but I'm certain we will do great things.

First of all, both classes should read chapter 1, section 1 and 2. Your first quiz will be on Monday August 31. Please familiarize yourself with the book.

Students should answer the following questions on loose-leaf to turn in at the beginning of class:

1. How do geographers view the world?
2. How are absolute and relative location different?
3. Determine the absolute location of Dakar, Senegal.

Finally, all students should view the following video about an episode of the West Wing and post a comment. How is the Peters map different and what does this tell us about maps in general?

this shows that the peter map is a a bit more accurate because it shows landscapes at there absolute location and also that the latitude and longitude lines are paralel. unlike the other map who have inaccurate location and in accurated dimensions of landscapes. It tells us that not any map can be completly acuurate because they might have location problems or dimension problems.

A real map was designed for it to be easy to use. In the video we learn that the real map does not have the correct location of places. The peters map shows the true location and size of continents such as Africa and Europe. What the peters map has to do with social equality is that unconsciously people associate size with power so if a country is represented smaller people will think of the country as a smaller country. What this video is basically saying is that maps have inaccurate information on them.

The second map shows the absolute location of where the countries and continents are located. The Peters map is different from the traditional mercaider map because the traditional map doesnt have the exact measurements, which misleads the reader to think that the location would be somewhere where it actually isnt, and the size would mislead you to think it's the same size as somewhere else.

This tells us that we might be looking at a map that could have the wrong location in reality.

The traditional mercator gives us an idea about where each country is located. However for it to be used to tell people the absolute location of a place, it may not be accurate because as the cartographer said,it distorks the relative size of nations and continents. The Peters map shows us the difference in size between two landmasses. While on the traditional mercator we would be stuck with the idea that every nation is the same size when Africa is seen as 14 times larger then Greenland on the Peters map.

In this video the Peters map is different because it is accurate in the possition and size of nations, the "East-West line are parallel and intersect with North-South axis at right angles." Making the map about perfect. While other maps show inaccurate locations and inaccurate possitions of nations around the world. This video tells us that all maps are made differently to reach their certain goal, even if they have to make changes here and there. For example: one map could be made to show mountain regions, and to do so it has to stretch countries, making the map irealistic in certain way. On the other hand one could be made for sailors, making the countries larger or smaller to reach the perfect map for a sailor to rech his destination. This is the difference between all maps.

The maps that we know, they are an easy way to help us to find places.
On Peter´s map we can see that the sizes of the countries and continents are completely different than the normal maps, and the normal maps might me wrong.
On his map it also shows the absolute location of the continents and their countries. What the guy said on the video might me also true "nothing is where we think it is"

hi, the map enlarges ares at the poles to creat straight lines and constant barings or geographic direction. It makes it easier to cross an ocean. It's very usefull for sailors, it also shrinks maps into smaller sizes which is better and smaller. Original maps are better than peters map in my point of view because when the map shrinks countries, it keeps others the same size.

Watching this video, I learned that the Peter maps are the maps that are much more accurate compared to traditional mercador maps. These maps do not show accurate sizes and location leading the reader to error. Reading the mercador map truly misleads readers because it can even triple the size of continents. They say in the video that people associate size and power therefore increases the size of powerful countries which misleads.

Yooooooooo

Well the west wing episode is quite interesting. It shows a more accurate version of are map, showing us that Germany isn't were it should be, and how africa is much better. They Refer to this as the Peter's Map . This lets us know how , not only have we been looking at the wrong map, but how easy it is to make a map which isn't right. I bring out of this, that We should never Be to sure of any map, as it will probably never always be right in everysingle area

this episode of west wing shows how maps can easily be wrong and how that affects the world's mentality. like it siad in the video,we see that a map can easily be associated with power. it also shows how hard a mapmakers job really is and how one wron curve in the latitude or longitude lines can throw off the entire accuracy of the map
