yes, we all love unit tests...

Congratulations class!

You have just finished one unit test. I'm sure you all did very well and ench'llah you will have your grade by Wednesday. Either way we are moving on! With the next six weeks or so we will explore Africa. In this short blog I want you to state two questions you have about Africa - it can be about the culture, the geography, the history, any topic you choose.

We will take a few minutes on Wednesday to address these questions. Much of this unit will be research and project based. Also, I would like you to pre-read pages 400-414 in your text book.

Lastly, check out this video about the DRC.

What is the issue here and how might this help us better understand the predicament of the people of this region of Africa.

Questions I have:
How many and which countries in Africa have a lot of natural resources that can be used to generate wealth?
Why are there so many wars in Africa? I it just because of the unfair splitting up of nations after colonialism or is there more to it?

This was an extremely long video and my mind wandered off halfway through, but the issue addressed is the war in Congo between the rebels and the government. The rebel leader claims that he is protecting Hutu people, and the DRC government accuses Rwanda of supporting the rebels.
Through this video, the importance and impact ethnic conflicts have is shown. Ethnic tensions have existed for a looooong time and they still continue to cause issues in society today.

Questions... hmmm...
What African country is considered the to be the most developed country in Africa? least developed?
Is there a positive side to colonization in Africa?

The video was kind of long - the journalists were talking too much. It is more interesting actually seeing what is happening. But anyways, the civil war in the in DRC is happening because the Rwandan rebel leader says that the Congolese government is supporting the Hutus.
This shows the negative effect of colonization. After the Belgians came into that part of central Africa, they divided power the way they wanted. And also divided land between countries the way they wanted, causing groups that don't necessarily get along to coexist.
This has caused a problem in Rwanda, Burundi, and in DRC.

First off, questions i have about Afrika are
1. Is it the colonial countries fault that Africa is poor?
2. Why didnt the Africans fight aginst the colonial powers?

The issue in this video is the unstability in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There is a problem with food and there is a problem with Hutu and Tutsi rebels in the D.R.C. I think that this will help us understand the politics of Africa because there are many other places that have had similar problems. Also they mention that infastructure is part of the problem in DRC but i also see that as a problem in the Rest of Africa.

Questions: Why is Africa so poor?
Why dont they do something abou tit?
Why is there so much corruption?
Why does it smell?
Why dont they get a proper sewage system?
Why dont they get a proper educatoin so the natives can make a good impression on the people who come here for the first time?
whats the oldest country in africa?
Whats the oldest religion?

The issue is that the dmc of congo is facing a rebel issue and that there are loads of people deing, and the government not doing anything to stabilize the sitaution.

My two questions are:

Why/How HIV/AIDS comes from South Africa?

Why Africa is so poor?

and another one,

Why does Africa seem dangerous, and all the bla bla for the Western people?

One word for this video, L-0-N-G.
The issue that is happening in Congo is really big. Hutus and Tutsis rebels in the D.R.C., from Rwanda is a really big problem. There is a lack of food and people are dying. The government does not do anything to help the situation which makes more and more problems everyday.

My first question is why Africans do not work harder to improve sanitation? People in my neighborhood choose to dump their trash in the grass next to our houses instead of walking 100 meters to the road where it will be picked up by a truck...
Second, I wonder why no major religions sprung up in Arica, seeing as it is the continent that has been inhabited the longest. The issue in the DRC right now is that a rebel army is causing thousands of people to flee their homes, claiming that they are fighting to protect their fellow Tutsis. This conflict goes back to the Hutu and Tutsi genocide in Rwanda, and the government of the DRC is now accusing the Rwandan government of backing the rebels.

Is there a Senegalese Communist/Socialist Party?

What is the reason why Nigeria, which is so rich in natural resources, isn't rich? Is it corruption? Lack of education?

The video which is 'only' 12 minutes long talks about the uprising conflict between the rebels in East Congo and the government. The rebels claim that the only reason why they are fighting is to avoid another genocide of the ethnic group called Hutu. Internationally, it has been rumoured that the rebels fight in order to gain access to the minerals (gold, cobalt) which we can find here. The Congolese government says that Rwanda is supporting the rebels and the fierce battle.

PROBLEMS:
-corrupt politics
-conflicting ethnicities
-corrupt military
-too much money poured into the military
-unstable government
-people of poverty

Let me tell you something. After World War 2 when most colonies became independent, and left to rule for themselves, it often became a mess. Generally previous British colonies like Congo i think, are now in deep trouble, why? Because after they gained their independence, Britain had left them... Franc, however, continued to influence and interfere with their colonies (like Senegal) that is why they have less problems. France had build schools and made sure the people would adopt atleast some of the western culture before left independent.

I think its ridiculous that so many people have to suffer over such a conflict... Congo is, resource wise, a wealthy nation, if only a little less money were spent on guns and a little more on social development, it would change hundreds of lives forever. Presidents promise and promise, yet often the stuff they promise is never heard of again.

I definatly agree with Yong-Nak on there being a pattern that tons of African countries are continually in conflict or something else. A long time ago, Europe had these things aswel, like with the nobles and stuff, continual war, too much money spent on war rather than other stuff. I think it is a stage a country/continent has to go through, they need to reach a certain enlightenment. Im sorry to say that some of the world's strangest presidents are African presidents. I wanna discuss the Gambian President in class, i mean that guy is just...
Another thing i wanna say is about this poverty. Africa is probably one of most plentiful continents on the planet. Its often just that the Westerners and the Easterners (Asians) have to come in and make use of that. For example in the middle east. Some very (not to offend anyone) 'stupid' people happen to be very very lucky to own a piece of land where there is oil. Then the Western/easterners have to come in drill holes for extreme amounts of money and suck it up to produce gas for our cars. The next thing they do with the several billion dollars they made by sitting there, is buy a massive steel pyramid on some island somewhere that they had made for them, buy a new collection of the most expensive car they can find and live there... Basicaly some african presidents do the same thing. Sell a mountain (full of tin) to a western/eastern company, let them build the drills, let them find the stuff, kick them out. take the stuff, sell it back to the western/easterners (who will manufacture consumer goods out of it) and use their profits to buy a couple of cargo ships full of weapons... Zimbabwe failed because the (generely) white people had build farms there, the president kicked them out, gave it to his friends (who didnt know how to farm), and their economy collapsed... All im saying is that some nations need a president who will focus on development rather than war, they need to learn tolerance for other ethnicites inside their nation and stuff like that...
mr. philen let me explain to you what i think so you can tell me whether i have the right idea or not.

1) How big is Africa (sq meters/km)?
2) How many people live in Africa?
3) What are the main natural resources of Africa?
4) How many different languages are spoken there?
5) How was Africa formed?
6) What were the borders of Africa before colonialism?
7) How many countries are in Africa?
8) What is the percentage of poor people living in Africa?

The issue is that the rebels are fighting the Congolese government, and now the UN Peacekeeping Force. It might show us how governments cannot take good care of certain situations and before they even take a jab at the solution, it's too late to do anything.

Questions:
How many valuable natural resources does Africa have? How much of it is exploited by foreigners?

The video is about the conflict in Congo between the rebels and the government. The rebel leader is fighting for the cause of defending the Hutus, and the Government believes that Rwanda is supporting the rebel. (psshhht...us NAWWW!!!)
This video is a perfect example of ethnic and territorial issues that have emerged due to colonization. I'm sure such conflicts were there before, but i believe that the unequal division between the territory and separating tribes etc.. is one of the main reasons these things emerge.

Question:
How come most of the resources that africa has get taken and exploited by foreigners?
Do the african's who own the land with the resources charge the foreigners who take those resources?

The point of this video was that there were a lot of civil wars happening in the DRC because of Rwandan rebels beleive that the DRC government supports the Hutus.

The questions that I have are, if the europeans and people from other continents keep coming to africa to take resources, how come the africans themselves aren't using those resources? or at least making a profit by taxing the foreigners who are in need for the resources.

I found the video really long, which made it hard to conentrade through out all of the video. The topic of the video was the wars taking place between the government and rebels from Rwanda. The reason for these wars is that the rwandan rebels beleive that the Congolese government is taking the side of the Hutus.
