Darfur Now...

In class we are watching a documentary on the crisis in Darfur. There are six perspectives to what is happening in Sudan. For this blog assignment I want you to first research the following website on professional athlete/celebrity Tracy McGrady.

How has Tracy involved himself with the issue in Darfur? What do you believe is the role of celebrities with world issues such as Darfur? Do we expect them to take a stand or is it not their problem?

What is your role? Do you think you have a significant role in what is happening there or with other worldly issues? Comment on the blog.

Second, I want you to select one of the six perspectives and discuss (on loose-leaf paper) their role, their motivation, and your perspective on what he/she is doing? What difficulties do he/she have in their life and how do you think they deal with the stress of the realities in their life?

You are expected to turn this in on loose-leaf paper tomorrow in class. Come ready to discuss...

Tracy is being involved with the crisis in Darfur by simply going there and learning more about the people and situation. Because of his celebrity status, he believes that, by being seen working for Darfur, he can convey the message and information about Darfur to the public. I don't think it is a celebrity's duty to work for issues like Darfur, but a celebrity is in a position that enables the person to do much if he or she chooses to. In a way, i guess it may seem to be their duty as they are able to make big differences much more easily unlike the majority of other people.
I think we all have a role that we play: the role of doing something or not doing anything. as an individual, i don't play a significant role at this moment, but I would play a small role that adds up with all the other "small roles" in the world.

Tracy is being involved by going to Darfur and putting his experiences there on his blog and film for the whole world to see. He heard the stories of the refugees at the various camps in Darfur and made a documentary of them. He wanted to bring back the stories so that regular around the world and people who read his blog and could be aware of the crisis and know what was going on there, unlike some others. As Tracy says, "So I figured if I didn’t know, I could learn, and bring back the stories to other people who also didn’t know." In addition to doing this, he opened a high school in a refugee camp in Goz Beida, a southern part of Chad, to help educate the kids in the refugee camp. He funded the construction of the school, the training of the teachers, and school supplies for a year.

I believe that the role of celebrities in world issues is to promote awareness and encourage people to do something about it. I think that sometimes celebrities are not allowed to take a stand if they want to (Britney Spears). But other people like Bono or Brad Pitt help during drastic situations and have skyrocketed to fame as great artists as well as great humanitarian leaders. If celebrities do take a stand they achieve even greater success and are admired for doing so.

I could just as well be one of the many dead there. I am just a civilian and have no status as anything. It is up to me if I have a huge role there. I mean, tommorrow i could start my own awareness campaign and website. But I might also choose to come home and do homework. Anyone can have a role in a major world issue if they really want to.

Tracy being a celebrity is great this way , when he talks to the public there are less inclined to look the other way, even though we shouldn't be doing that in the first place.
it's good for us to know whats happing around the world and not whats happing just in our neighborhood. Darfur is an opertunity for us humans to step up and make a change im not saying it will happen over night but every other child that knows about the horror's that are happing in darfur is one more that can help.

Comrades :P,

McGrady is being involved in the recent conflicts in Darfur by taking a closer look at it and contributing economically. He doesn't have at all an obligation to go there because of his fame, but i think that he can take advantage of his fame to spread the struggles the Sudanese people are having.

The common capitalistic method of individuality has finished with solidarity. The desire people have of not being aided or aiding other people to be happy has conquered people's minds. All what people care about nowadays is money and we are being oppressed by corrupt governments (Bush's one) which care more about their interests than the public's needs. However and even though this detritive moral revolution we have experienced, we still have religion and charity. Each of us makes the difference. I know its sounds cheesy but the truth is that the American, Russian, Fench Revolutions have been carried out successfully because of the commitment of individuals for a bettter future.

Tracy is being involved in the crisis in Darfur by going to Sudan, exploring the country, and see what is really going on over there. He is a celebrity which can make a lot of people change their mind, meaning that, as he is going to Darfur to help many people will do the same because in 2008 our models are most likely celebrities. I don't think it is the role of a celebrity to try to help or reinstall peace in other countries.

I don't think that ME as Christine alone I could make a huge change in the world. It takes time and a lot of persons who are willing to help. But we never know, everything is possible and one person could make a change.

tracy mcgrady is goin out and learning about the situation going on in darfur. because of his status he can teach more people than a person that goes out and hands out flyers in the street. with him going more people that are unlikely to be involved would mght be. for me, the celibrities dont have to go out and talk about darfur. for me this has to do with that person's conscious. if they have the ability to do then whats stopping them?

our role is to do something about what is happening in darfur and at least convince our family and friends to do something that might be helpful, such as donations ect. though this is small it may help in a big way.

Drafur is defenatly a place taht needs help and the people should be supported. For my opinion his effort to help and the way he wants to do something about the crisis is probably very useful. I mean if any random person would try to help by using methods like him, none or maybe a few but not enough would py attention. On the other side if no one does anything about it nothing is going to happen. It lies in the hands of everey singel person. Every person helping adds to all the other singel persons and it could change the whole situation.
Tracy himself is actually also not helping a lot by just being involved in the crisis in Darfur and learning about the people and their lifestyle, but with his celebrity, whcih enables him to get the worlds ' attention, he can help quite a lot.

Tracy McGrady became involved with the crisis in Darfur because he heard about it on CNN, and he just doesn't want to be one of those people who watches about the conflict on the news and just watches it. He wanted to go to Darfur so he could get a better understanding of the conflict/genocide so he could help out. I think that it is a good thing that celebrities are getting involved but i dont think that Celebrities, even though they're famous, have the power to really make something happen. I think that to make something really happen, the president of a country needs to threaten the government of Sudan that if the genocide doesn't stop, that he'll come with his military and attack their government. We, have to take a stand by alerting and pushing our government to take a stand against the government of Sudan.

uhh i think that t-mac is getting involved because he doesnt want to be another viewer that watches one documentary and goes oh no then chages the channel. The celebrity status that he carries with him wherever he goes, can influence many fans and other celebreties to do some things to help the sitaution in Darfur, so that people can stop getting killed or raped because they are trying to survive. No i dont think i have a role there.

Tracy McGrady is getting involved by actually going in Darfur where the genocide is taking place to educate himself about all the events that are happening there. I beleive that it's not specifically the task of celebritiesto have a role in the world issues such as Darfur, however i do beleive that if they have the chance to influence other people with their status they should definitly take advantage of that and educate their fans and others into making a difference. My role is to let people know about the genocide that is happening presently in Darfur because before this class, I had never heard of it before so it is probably not talked about enough. I don't, however think that my role is very significant because if i am realistic appart from letting others know that it's going on i really can't do anything else that will change it or stop it from going on.

He believes you first need to understand the problem. he went over there as a private project for himself and saw how the people were suffering, rather than hearing about it on the 9 oclock news. He connected with the people (something they also need, to know that someone cares). He tries to get people to concentrate their efforts on keeping the displaced kids wel, by providing them with education ect...
I think its good that these 'celebrities' are doin something because so many people look up to them and if they see that these people are doing it, then it must be the right thing.
I think the least you can do, is show that you care. You need to sacrifice a little more than just something as common as money, but try to investigate the problem, try to understand it. That will most likely help the people in the long term (cuz then it kinda sticks with you), its like raising awarenes!

Happy with his life achievements so far, Tracy decided he needed to do something for others this time. Interested in the Darfur crisis, he traveled there to film a documentary in order to educate himself and others. i think the celebrity status comes with a responsability. this status comes with the power to influence millions of people, making it there duty to attract attention to things that everyone should be aware of. I think that everyone who is able to should play a part in worldly issues, it just ends on whether we choose to do something, or wait until something is done.

T-Mac has involved himself in the Darfur issue by travelling there, and trying to make the public see that he cares about what is happening there by making a documentary. His intention was to get the public to take action, which i think is very good because he, as a celebrity, has a huge influence how people think, and what they think about. Not only that, he can make people actually do something, instead of thinking "thats too bad, but i cant do anything about it". I think that it is part of your role as a celebrity to influence people to take action on world issues, because you are one of the few people that actually have that power. It is an obligation, but just like all obligations, it is not followed by many people, and there is not way to force it on people. I don't mean that if they don't, they are not good people, but to complete the role of a celebrity, you should try to wake people up to reality and have a positive impact on the world. Since i am not a celebrity, i do not have such a big impact. I can, however, influence some people, and take action myself by signing petitions and such. Every little bit helps, because all together, it becomes alot.

Tracy is getting involved with the crisis in Darfur by being aware, searching to learn more, and spreading awareness on the issue. He has also opened a high school in Chad where he helps by donating school supplies to the school every year. The role of celebrities with world issues is basically to create awareness. Because they are celebrities and have a lot of fans, it is easy for them to reach out to people in crisis situations by letting their fans know about it. More people would listen to them simply because they are famous, and more people will act out and do anything which is in their power to do.
I dont think i play an important role in anything that is going on today. But i think if anyone really believe in a cause, they could work together with others to make a difference.

Tracy is doing what i wish all stars could do. he is using his fame and publicity as a tool to help spread awareness. he has visited Darfur and seen what a wreck it is. he is helping to draw more attention to the predicament there.
i realy respect people like him that use the fact that thy are famous to the advatage of others. sometimes it seems that celebs get so caught up in the glits and glamour that makes up hollywood that they forget about real people. it is no suprise that most people prfere to read celeb magazines than those on news. especially the younger generations. So if celebs talk about world issues that are happening the chances that people will listen are pretty high. it will hopefully inspire the person to read up on whatever the celebrity is talking about.

Tracy has done an what many think is an amazing job. I do not disagree entirely considering the amount of people that do nothing.

It is no ones obligation ever to do anything, i mean in the end people always do everything out of free will, always, even decisions that seem where one option is simply ridiculous, people do things from free will.

I find that a celebrity taking interest in situations like Darfur are great, but more people if not everyone should try to take action towards ALL problems like darfur.

I guess i have been in situations where i could have helped, i think on the plane there were like envelopeswhere one could put in money, but i never understood fully the smany of the situations that were presented in them. And really, i was not carrying that much change.
