I ran through southwest asia...one...time

WHhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaasssssssssssuuuuppppp,

So, after your POLITICAL MAP TEST on Friday we will begin the flick "Persepolis". This movie is narrated through the eyes of a Persian woman reflecting upon her youth in a changing Iran. For this blog post you will research Iran and the Islamic Revolution that took place there in February of 1979.

First, read over the first part of Wikipedia's info

Second, look over the timeline of Iran

Third, read over the review of the movie that we will watch - "Persepolis"

In a non-judgmental manner we want to explore events and emotions surrounding this time period. I wonder, what do WE know about Iran and why do we know what we know? In this region how do politics and religion seem to mix and how do we, from the "Western" world view this? Are we judgmental of countries that intend to exist mixing the two? Or, are we merely judgmental of Islam? Thoughts?

Don't forget to study for your test!!!!

Most of us do not know much about Iran right now apart from it having been tagged as part of the "axis of evil" by Bush and its nuclear programs. This is pretty much all we hear on the news. Religion plays a major role in the government as it is a theocratic republic. We from the western world often view this as terrible, especially because many constitutions state that religion and state should be separated, but also because of what we have seen in the past century with extremists. I think we are judgmental when it comes to Islam more than theocracies: We automatically assume that Islamic states restrict freedom and often violate common perspectives of human rights. This image is mostly a result of extremist sects and the terrorism that has become common nowadays. However, I do know that people are also judgmental when it comes to the mix of politics and religion as well, and they go crazy about it.

i dont know a lot but anyway, but for iran the main religion is islam, and it plays a major role in the everyday life of the people and its goverment. they are also known for their so called terrorist acts, which is claimed by bush. for us in the western world mixing goverment and religion is a bad idea and may lead to some awful results. our constitutin shows that state and religion and the country must be kept seperated, so to mostr of us the people that usually mix are usually the taliban and other terrorist groups, so i say we are judgemental of these country. me myself, being a muslim, im not judgemental of islam =), but most people usually are, especially the people in the united states, the see an aribic muslim in the airport the start acting strange around the person. even the movies we watch are judgemental on islam and the people of islam, this is quite sad, but true though.

Religion and Politics should not be together and i understand if some people do not agree with this. I mean what people have the right to put one certain religion in politics, i mean how will things ever get doe countries would never get along. Do u see the USA with another Muslim country like trading partners or anything like that?
No because the western worlds perception of the Muslim country's has been tainted. Over the past decade Muslim rule has been saught as evil and the birth place of terrorism. This is completely false and it seem like any country with Muslim rule is immediately frowned upon by the western world. The western world or maybe just America is judgmental of country's that are Muslim based. Now im not saying we all do this but when a man dressed in a turban and has a big beard goes on your plane, don't u think twice? this is because of this new image that Bush has illustrated and it is convincing but it is false. The USA does not trust any country under Muslim rule and that's just it. Most people don't know anything about Iran but what they have seen on TV and that's how they judge it, I can see why Iran could be mad. People have to do some research on something before they start to judge, Its like the same old saying don't judge a book by its cover.

Yeah Geoffrey I'm still healthy lol No more chicken wings and chili cheese fries for me haha... Glad to hear that the new school is going pretty well for you. Ok, on to the blog ;)

I don't think our class knows much at all about Iran, apart from the fact that it is an Islamist Republic ruled by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a President who strongly believes in the construction of nuclear weapons in Iran from the great deposits of uranium they have. Also, I'm not sure if everyone knows this in our class, but a few days ago, the Iranian President called Israel "the most racist nation in the world," and this shows how the people of Iran might extremely hate Jews. Another thing that we know about Iran is that its main religion is Islam and its population consists of mostly Arabic people. I think we know the information we do about Iran because our beliefs are greatly influenced by the way Iran and the rest of Southwest Asia are depicted in the media. For example, if the news shows a war-torn country like Afghanistan, people from Western countries might think that that is the only facet of Afghanistan. In reality, though, the everyday people who live in Afghanistan might be very hospitable and nonviolent. They might actually even support the United States Army in its efforts to bring down the Taliban insurgents. So, the news is very biased and does not always clearly show how a country is.

Politics and religion always combine together to from governments that do not believe on the separation of church and state. Mainly in this region, there has been the Taliban, the Islamist Republic imposed in Iran, and the regime that was fronted by Sadaam Hussein in Iraq. All these governments have used religion to justify their governmental actions, and have often done unjust things. For example, in The Kite Runner, the government official ordered for the armed men to throw stones at the woman and kill her, just because she had committed adultery. And even more, the crowd in the soccer stadium praised the men for doing so. Also, religion can influence how the politics of a country work in this region. In Iraq, Sadaam Hussein used the many rules of the Islam Holy book, the Qu'ran, to dictate what life was like in Iraq and run his regime.

I think that most of us view this combining of church and state as an extremely detrimental thing to a country and some of us might see it as a disgrace to what modern forms of government typically are. We see countries that rely on this in their government as primitive countries that are isolated from the modern ideas of democracy, monarchy, and republic. I don't think that we are mainly judgmental of Islam, because there are many other examples in which the combination of church and state did not further along a country, like in Puritan communities in America. Through their "witch trials", whole communities became divided and many innocent people were killed because a friend or neighbor told on them in order to clear their name from the list of suspected witches.

Cubans,

First of all hifive Geoffrey (Is Chris still hitting on Tara? que cabrĂ³n jejeje), ONE UP

Our opinion on Iran has been directly influenced by the Western common thought. For us Westerners, religion as a form of government is unnatural and medieval. We consider that God and the Church should only be the ones that decide wether an action is a sin or not but not decide wether something is a crime. With the past tragic terrorist attacks in New York, London and Madrid our view of Islam has been completely stereotypized. Whenever we see a guy with a black beard and hat at an airport we begin to suspect. We are being drived by our animal instict by rejecting a whole religion. For us, a dictatorship seems evil but a dictaroship ruled by Islam seems even more evil and this is why we reject Iran.

I think we are not aware of a lot of things that are going on in Iran. All I know is that there is not a lot of piece. However the countries in this region are actually always the ones most talked about on tv or any news...wether in newspapers or in magazines. It never stopps. The is always some terror going on and it doesnt seem that the people in Iran are happy about their state of life. For my opinion do people from the western world always relate terror with this country and see it as a theocratic republic. The main problem over there is that religion and government are not seperated. This leads to unfair decisions in judging people and also in no hzuman rights. I mean what is with the people that don't live as strong the islam? these states often restrict freedom and the rights of people because of tehir religion.I also think that the mix of politics brings a lot of problems related to the judgment. But even in thisn cases religion plays an important role and people feel not right treated. Whta the westren world can do abot this problem is agood question, however I don't think there is a solution.

i also agree with yognak. we, the global international world seem to have this twisteed view about Iraq. the global media doesn't seem to help much either. alll they tell us is what the politicians are content on giving them and footage that supports these politicians' views. in the beginning it seemed as if the US was baing portrayed as the good guys. that was up until it became obvious that they were only there for oil. i was suprised when i read some of these articles and it said that in 1953 the US and the UK intervened in the uranian government system and overthtrew it just because it wasn't co-operating with its wishes.these wishes were cncerning its trade in oil. they eveny tryied to prevent its trading network. when looking back at this history it makes you think why the worl would have let the US stay in Iraq after it did something like this and proved its still unquenched lust for oil.

i think that the world doesn't believe in mixing a religion with government. the thing is when this occurs it seems that there is a tendency to then impose the state religion onto the people. and people who don't support the religion are sometimes forced to or exhiled. this could lead to issues such as religious tensions and therefore small scale wars, holocausts and violations of rights. but then sometimes you must think: who can blame them? there haven't been many illusterous examples promoting this form of government. but just beacuse we have doubts that such a system could work does not give us a right to try and interfere it that country's politics.

I don't think we know about Iran except that they are part of Bush's black list. Islam, the main religion in Iran plays a very important role in the communitee and in the government. For the western side I don't think mixing religious beliefs and government is a great idea. We have too many religious views in the same area and this would only create problem. From what we hear and see we usually judge Islam before even KNOW about it. We think that it is a violate and isolated religion.

I didn't know that much about Iran, except that it is a theocracy, meaning that it is ran by religion ( Islam). From the news, Iran is a portrayed as not a peaceful country. This is mostly because it is ran by Islam and many people do not believe in mixing politics and religion. Iran is known as country with a lot of terrorist acts but after all the USA likes to portray most Middle Eastern countries that way so i don't know to what extent it is true. Even though know that everything we hear of on the news is not 100% true, i do not thing it is right to mix religion and politics.

Most of what we know about Iran comes from the news, which is very biased. We only ever hear negative things about the country (nuclear weapons and whatnot). I think it must be a very intriguing country geographically though. I do think people judge countries that mix religion and politics, but the USA is one of those countries. It may not seem very prominent, but for example gay marriage is not being allowed because the bible says marriage should be between one man and one woman. The 'Western' world is in many ways hypocritical. In addition, i think we are judgmental of Islam. We don't seem to be able to get our heads around the fact that Islam is not being practiced the way it is supposed to be practiced, and that many bad things have come from illiterate religious leaders that can not read the Koran, yet 'teach it' to their subjects in their own way.

Right now we don't know a lot about Iran except that if we listen to the reasons bush had to attack it Iran should be a pretty evil place. All we know about Iran is what we read in the newspapers or what we see on TV. Religion plays a very important role in Iran. It is mixed along with politics. Us, westerners are very judgmental about people who mix religion and politics because we've learned not to yet we know that they will always relate to each other one way or another. This affects even more iran since the religion is Islam and a lot of the times Islam's rules are even more strict so we sometimes disagree with what they say but then again it's not our country so we should let the people there rule it how they feel like ruling it. Nobody is coming from out of the united states to tell them how to run their country. So we should do the same

I think it's a bad idea to mix religion into a government and more importantly in a countries constitution... Afghanistan has been relatively unlucky and considering all the stuff thats happening around it, I guess the middle east is just unlucky with America and stuff... Just last week or so, they had a big summit on Afghanistan. Malaysia manages to incopperate religion into their government in a very passive way, they manage to support the minor religious practices but withhold from all the overdoing things...

Many people are only aware of the things they see on the news about southwest asian countries. We see that Iran is a member of the axis of evil, that it is host to talibans and terrorists etc... it seems that the media has a sort of negative propangada against this region; it's true that terrorist are common there, but that doesn't mean that the whole country is against the U.S

Iran has a theocratic government, and in the western world, the majority of the people believe that religion should be separated from government. Already the fact that countries like Iran are ran by religious leaders is not appealing, but Muslim extremist have spread a dirty image of Islam making theocratic countries like Iran have a tainted image from the start. So not only do we feel the need to be judgmental about their governments, but also take the liberty to follow negative stereotypes and judge a whole continent, on the acts of a couple thousands. I think western countries (cough* the U.S) should set boundaries, on how they meddle with other countries

WHy try to change the lifestyle that the Iranians have been living forever? WHy is America always pointing at Iran? is it fear? or do they really want to help the people. I feel that the Iranians that revolt against their lifestyle in Iran, are the ones that are exposed to western ideas. If they let the citizens try to solve their own problems, maybe it could work. They are already in a dilema and it increases everyday because of the media. Is Iran as bad as it looks on t.v? If the Western world cared so much about the people in Iran, then why didn't they try to solve the problem many years ago? how come they are intruding NOW? is it because Iran is developing? or for the opposite? I think people should stop mixing Religion and ANcient Traditions! The Western world should not try to make Iran become like them. People judge way too fast, when they know very little. I know very little, so do you, because the media only shows us what they want us to believe.
