How will we fjord our way out of this one?

Yo class,

Nungi tambale sunu liggeey ak Europe. So, first, go to: http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player/places/index.html

Watch the videos on Destination Spain and Ireland under the Western Europe regions section. What intrigues you about these two countries in Europe? How is this region distinct from other regions we have studied thus far?

Next, many of us have been fortunate enough to have traveled to Europe. However, we do not know all about it (though some of us probably think we do). What questions do you have about this region? We will do our best to attempt to answer or get on the path to answer these questions.

I found that Ireland is actually very secluded and it seems the people enjoy it this way. The northern part of Ireland is still part of the United Kingdom and it seems like there is a little bit of friction between the two sides. Ireland has many touristic sites and like it suits the common tourist. The whole scene seems more inviting then many of the other places we have studied. With Spain or more specifically Barcelona, this town is very modern but at the same time, it doesn't just hold things for business it has many cultural aspects to it and it seems like the people thrive of this cultural side of this bustling city night after night day after day. Barcelona may not be that secluded but it is next to the beaches and this also brings in a lot of tourists, maybe this region is much more touristic and more open to the outside world than past places we have studied,Does Europe have a form of cast system or hierarchy like in India and other places? And what Type of government makes up the majority of the percentage of governments in Europe?

I can't find the video..But without watching it i would say europe is the continent with the richest in varety. The km differences are pretty small, but the landsacape difference huge. If you are in northern sweeden it is over all very cold, the most of the time around 10°.Only the summers are mild(25°). However in south spain or Italy the climate increases extrem. IT is almost never cold and the summers are very hot. Bside the climate and landscape differences the buildings in each country are very different. Overall though, european countries have a all a similar archetecture, which is noticeable in the big cities, such as Paris, Berlin, London; Madrid, Rom, Budapest. These typical buildings come from the archetecture in the 18the century. This archetecture is for my opinion beautiful and very unic. The cultutre differences are not the huge. The majority is christian. The people in europe are however very distributed since the Eu is established. There are some extremes such as in Germany, where a lot of Turkey people live. This is because the country needed tons labors after World War 2. FRom then on Families have been moving to germany until today. Now almost every bigger town has a Turkey quater.

Many things intrigue me about Spain. The Royal Palace looks awesome, and I did not go there while I was in Madrid. Also, Spain's actual history intrigues me, and it would be interesting to see how it might provide inspiration for some pieces of art, like the statue of Don Quixote or the paintings of El Greco and Goya in the Prado. In Barcelona, it would be really interesting to visit there and hear the differences in the two languages spoken, Spanish and Catalan. Also, the massive church by Antoni Galdi (don't know there how it's spelled) seemed like an interesting aspect of Barcelona, and I would like to find out why people expect it to be finished in such a long time. I definitely want to try the tapas when I go to Madrid this summer because I didn't do that last time I went. Also, the flamenco sounds really great and I would definitely want to hear some. All in all, it intrigues me that in this small country (no offense Jorge) there are so many differences from city to city, from the art to the traditional customs to the language.

For Ireland, I am mainly intrigued by how the city and country can exist side-by-side in such a small place like this without one conflicting with another. In addition, Trinity College caught my eye because it is the oldest University in Ireland and it contains a large portion of books that talk about Ireland's history and other things. Newgrange really intrigued me because it's a very vital part of Ireland's pre-history and because it contains primitive humans that might give us a look into our past. Ireland's architecture looks very royal and layered sort of like the English designed it not the Irish. I'm intrigued by the story between Ireland's architectural style. The overall atmosphere of Ireland just looks very calm and beautiful to me and definitely would be a reason for me to go there.

In this region, the culture is much more different from country to country, and the languages are ones that are spoken more commonly in the Western world. In this region, it seems that the government is for the most part stable, and dictatorships get crushed much more easily. Also in this region, the economy is not necessarily as successful as in other parts of Asia, like Korea, Japan, or Malaysia. The climate here looks very different from anything I've seen in Africa or Asia. Also in this region, it seems that history is idealized much more than in the many regions of Africa or Asia. Finally, in this region, art plays a much greater role than it does in those of Africa or Asia.

How did the King of Spain come to power? What is the place with the most tourists in a year in Western Europe? In what ways is Catalan more different than Spanish? Is there a blueprint for the massive Galdi church that is still not constructed??

Ireland seems to have a lot of history as well as natural beauty. However, the weather seems to be rather soggy and cloudy all the time like much of Europe. There is a lot of stone age remains such as the tomb in the video and Stonehenge, which are pretty mystical and curious to us.
Spain is a country of energetic people (jorge) with a "passion for living." There are lots of festivals and celebrating that are everyday aspects of life in Spain. When we think of Spain, we normally think of bullfighting and guitars, but it is actually a rich melting pot of numerous cultures, such as the Moorish culture. I'd like to learn how to play the flamenco.

A question about Europe I have is, apart from colonialism, how has Europe managed to prosper so well despite the destruction of two world wars that took place there?

Before this, i knew absolutely nothing about Ireland and not too much about Spain. So these videos were informative. This region is more developed than the other regions we studied, i think that is the main difference. about ireland, I'd like to find out more about the people. This video showed us more how the country looked like and the cathedrals..etc. But i think people make up a country so i would've liked to find out more about how the people live and a little about their culture. I liked the video on Spain better because it showed us some of Spain's culture. I wonder what some of the big issues that people in this region face?

Irelend, i've actually went there back in i think it was sometime from 2002-2004. It was a nice trip, i went with my family and my grandma. We flew to Dublin from Atlanta then we rented a car and drove from Dublin to Galway, on the west of Ireland, then up to Belfast, in Northern Ireland. In Dublin we didnt go to Trinity College but we did get to see other sights in Dublin. On the way to Galway, we got to stop at St. Patrick's birthplace, and there's a big statue of him on top of a hill. We also visited this place called Giant's Causeway, which is where the locals a long time ago belived that giants lived. We visitid the monastary mentioned in the video, the place right before they showed the fort. Then we went into Northern Ireland. We went to Belfast, and that was pretty neat, we saw this cathedral. And that pretty much sums up all i remember about Ireland.

Spain is a place in Europe i really want to go. I want to go there because of it's rich culture. I also like the architecture of Cathedrals, when i lived in Brasil, they had beautiful cathedrals, and so did Portugal, so im curious to see how similar the Cathedrals are in Spain to Portugal and Latin America, because the Spanish countries and Portuguese speaking countries in South America have similar cathedrals.

A question i have about Europe is is it more ethnically diverse than the U.S., or is it about the same? The same goes for large cities, are London and Paris, for example, more ethnically than say New York, L.A., or Chicago?????

Ireland is a highly folkloric country. It is secluded and seems to have a fairly calm population. It attracts tourist with it's breath-takin scenery and its "40 shades of green" however, you wouldnt find party animals fighting for plane tickets.

Spain on the other hand, is highly varied. People go there to suck in its architecture and art, or they go to learn about the history and the morish influence. Its attraction can also be counted as the beaches and nightlife.

I don't think i learnt much from this video, i already had background knowledge about both these regions and a general idea, the video just confirmed and strenghthened my opinion.

OK, so Europe is VERY Diverse, just like any other continent. COmparing spain and Ireland is like comparing apples and oranges. Spain is alot more cultural, they are indeed very unique, while Ireland shares a similar culture to the other scandinavian nations (england, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark). Ireland is renown, however, for their beer and environment (large open meadows and green pastures).
Ireland has gone through centuries of poverty, only recently (since it has been accepted to the European Union) has it been able to boost its economy with European funds, this is great because it make the continent that much wealthier. Im assuming irelands main income is of agriculture and Tourism.

Each country has different cultures, landscapes and different way of life. After watching the videos, i would rather go to Spain than Ireland. Spain seems to be more fun to party and Ireland seems to be a place of rest. AM sure there are negative things in both countries which arent shown in the video. i would like to know how the location of each country benefit it and affect it?

i found both of these videos to be very informative and maybe just a tad to much like an advertisement. there whey these countries are portrayed would make you think that they are almost like the perfect worlds :). anyway what they told me about pain are things that i have already heard of before. beautiful weather and architecture. sangrias.i found the ireland video to be more interesting. maybe that's because i've never really heard much about it. i like the views and the greens. there doesn't seem like to much to do though but i'de like to visit their cathedrals.between the two counrties though i think i woud probably prfer ireland. i'm into folklore and architecture and greenery with rain. would really like t lear ,ore about it.
